There is a small gold rush in food apps: point a camera at your fridge, an Ai reads what you have, out comes a recipe. SuperCook, Fridge AI, ScanYourFridge, FridgeoAI, Chef AI, Recipy, TasteOS, and more arriving monthly. We build in this space, so we tried them all on a real fridge, jars facing backwards and all. The camera tech mostly works. That is exactly why it is no longer the interesting part.

What the whole category gets right

Credit first. The scan itself has crossed from demo to dependable. Every app we tried found the tomatoes; most found the eggs. Ingredient recognition on visible, distinct items is now solved well enough that it has stopped being a differentiator, roughly a year after it was the whole pitch. The apps also share a genuinely good instinct: starting from what you own beats starting from a recipe catalogue, for reasons we have written about before.

The gap: a list is not a decision

Here is the test that separates them: after the impressive scan, did we actually cook the suggestion? Across a week of trying, almost never. The scan produces a list, the list gets matched to a recipe database, and the app stops, as if the only thing between a person and dinner was information. It never is. The real blockers live in the questions no scanner asks: how much time do I have, what am I trying to do with my eating this month, what did I already eat today, and does this dish fit any of that.

At 7pm the problem is not that anyone lacks a frittata recipe. The problem is deciding, while tired, whether tonight's choice fits the person you are trying to be this month. A camera with no opinion cannot help with that, and knowing was never the same thing as eating well.

The other camp: scorekeepers

The apps that do think about health mostly sit in the opposite camp: the trackers. Log the meal, receive the number, and by 9pm the number has quietly become a grade. That story has an ending everyone knows, most people abandon calorie counters within weeks, and guilt does a lot of the pushing. So the market splits cleanly in two: cameras with no opinion, and scorekeepers with far too much of one.

What the missing third thing looks like

The app worth building sits between those camps: a wingman, not a coach. You set your own lines once, your goals, your conditions, your boundaries for the week. Then the camera stops being a party trick and starts answering the only daily question that matters: does this fit inside my lines, and if not, what would? Suggestions come only from what you own. A meal outside your lines gets a plain verdict and a compliant alternative you could actually cook, never a grade and never a streak. On visible, distinct items, yes, usefully so. On occluded items and quantities, no app is reliable, ours included. The honest design treats every scan as a fast, mostly right starting point you can correct in a tap, not a perfect inventory.
